Benjamin Segar Dean, the son of Robert and Susannah Dean, was born at Clitheroe in 1853. By 1859 the family had removed to Manchester and were living in the Cheetham district of the city.

Benjamin Segar Dean was articled to James Stevens, and in 1871 he was awarded second premium of £1 in MSA Student Prizes for a perspective view of a mansion. He was employed for many years as assistant, later chief assistant to Woodhouse and Willoughby and went with J H Woodhouse when the partnership ended. About 1906 he entered into partnership with J H Woodhouse and A E Corbett as Woodhouse Corbett and Dean. Following Corbett’s departure, the practice continued as Woodhouse and Dean. He was elected LRIBA in 1912.

Benjamin Sagar Dean died on 24 January 1934 at Crumpsall Institute and was survived by his widow Ellen. He was interred at St Paul’s Church, Kersal Moor, Salford.
