Born in 1846 at Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire, Charles Wesley Johnson was the son of John Johnson and Mary Ann Sayer. His father was a stone dealer and proprietor of Slater’s Bank and Furness Quarries. As his name suggests, Charles was brought up as a Wesleyan Methodist. He lived all his life in Whaley Bridge and designed several churches, chapels and houses in the High Peak area. [R Fletcher]
