The son of George and Martha Hammond, George A Hammond was born at Norbury, near Stockport, Cheshire, and christened at Norbury Parish Church in September 1855. About 1858 the family moved to Whitworth, Rochdale. By 1871 he was articled to a land surveyor, and by 1881 was an architect and surveyor. He is assumed to have remained in paid employment until about 1895 at which time he set up in independent practice in Rochdale.
