Henry Bancroft

Henry Bancroft was born on the 17th June, 1834, the eldest son of James Bancroft, of Broughton Old Hall, Manchester, who was for many years Vice-chairman of the London and North Western Railway Company. He began his professional career in the City Surveyor’s Office, Manchester, before entering the office of John Bateman, by whom he was entrusted with much important work, both as an assistant and in after years when practising on his own account. On leaving John Bateman he was appointed Resident Engineer on the Fylde Waterworks and the Blackpool and Lytham Railway, under T. B. Foster. On the completion of those works, in 1864, he commenced business on his own account and during his thirty-six years of private practice he designed and carried out a number of important works, including the sewerage and sewage disposal of the Borough of Colne, and Northwich together with the waterworks for Winsford.
In 1880 he was elected councillor for Kersal Ward, Broughton, in the place of Mr William Whittaker deceased. There was no opposition. Henry Bancroft married Mary, the eldest daughter of Robert Neill, of Manchester (building contractor). He died at Southport on the 15 May, 1900, leaving four sons, the eldest of whom, Frederick H Bancroft, joined him in partnership in 1894. (Elijah Crosby)
