James Birchby Langley
The son of James Langley, Esq and his wife Elizabeth, James Birchby Langley was born at Manchester, on 28 December 1872. He was educated privately, and at Chalmers, Presbyterian, and the Mechanics' Institute (later Manchester Technical School), School of Art, Cavendish Street, and Owens College before serving articles with a Manchester firm, of architects and engineers. After several years' experience in Liverpool, he returned to Manchester in 1896, and shortly after commenced practice at 49, Deansgate. He was considered an expert in brewery architecture and had acted as architect for several (unidentified) breweries in Manchester and Liverpool. He also made a special study of wrought and cast iron in mouldings and castings. Associate and Fellow of the Manchester Society of Architects
Conservative in politics he was Chairman of St Clement's Ward Conservative Association; a member of the Manchester Executive Conservative Association and represented St Clement's Ward in the Manchester City Council.
James Birchby Langley retired to Southport where he died on 23rd January 1947.
