The son of Benjamin Hoyland, master builder and his wife Frances, both originally from Yorkshire and the brother of Arthur James Hoyland (qv). Although an Associate of the Manchester Society of Architects in the 1890s, he had little or no involvement with the RIBA and is not included in the Dictionary of British Architects. Directory entries suggest that he remained as an assistant throughout his career. In the mid-1900s he obtained employment as a draughtsman with water engineers. John Henry Ormrod died at his residence 15 Alexandra Avenue, Levenshulme, on 7 November 1944 and was buried at Willow Park Cemetery following a funeral service at St Paul’s Church, Levenshulme.
