John Jennison

The second son of Richard and Mary Jennison and the grandson of John Jennison, founder of Belle Vue Zoological Gardens, John Jennison was born at Belle Vue in 1867. He was educated at Pedmore Grange Academy, Stourbridge; St. John's College, Preston, and Boulogne sur Seine, Paris before; serving his articles with Mangnall and Littlewoods, architects and surveyors, of Manchester and remained for several years. His entry in Pike notes that he had been engaged on plans for some of the largest undertakings for the public amusement in Lancashire, including the Empress Ball room, Blackpool; the Winter Gardens Pavilion, and East and West End Piers and Pavilions, Morecambe; the Victoria Pier and Pavilion, Colwyn Bay, and the Haydock Park and Chester Race courses, all of which were undertaken by Mangnall and Littlewoods. This would suggest that he was employed as an assistant until about 1900. By 1904 he was practising from 71 Deansgate Arcade, the  address previously occupied by his cousin Arthur Jennison. He was admitted an Associate of the Manchester Society of Architects in 1890 and travelled in Egypt and Ceylon.

John Jennison died on 5 November 1921 at 6 Newton Avenue Longsight. Interment at Southern Cemetery on Tuesday 8 November at 11.30am.
