John Macnamara

John Macnamara was born in Leeds in 1845, moving to Manchester in 1857 where he trained as an architect and surveyor. In 1874 he was appointed assistant to Maxwell Roscoe, surveyor to the trustees of the Stamford Estates following which he became surveyor for the estates of the larger part of Hale, working for the Harrops, Leathers, Fowdens, Bowers, Leicesters, Cramptons, Worthingtons and other such families. He took over the development of Bower Road when it stalled and laid out numerous roads South Downs Drive, Park Drive, Harrop, Belmont, Prescot, Leicester, Ollerbarrow, Westgate, Hazlewood, Leigh, Rappax, North, and Bancroft roads. He taught in the Altrincham Technical School which was linked to the Old Free Library in Lower George Street and worked with J H Broun to design and build Mossburn Buildings on the west side of Stamford New Road, Altrincham.
He was elected on to Hale Urban District Council in 1902 where he supported amalgamation with Altrincham to allow better-shared facilities. He later put up for Altrincham Council but returned to Hale Council in 1911.
