The third son of Thomas and Eleanor Roberts of Scarborough, Louis Edgar Roberts was born in the summer of 1847 and christened on 26 September of that year. Census returns record Thomas Roberts as being a tailor employing five men and three boys.

By 1871 Louis Edward Roberts had moved to Manchester and was living in lodgings in Chorlton on Medlock. His occupation was given as a draughtsman. According to census returns, by 1881 he was an Architectural and Civil Engineering Assistant to a railway engineer; in 1891 an architect; and in 1901 a Railway Company architect. He became an Associate of the Institute of Civil Engineers but resigned in 1907. His death notice in the Manchester Guardian states that he was for thirty-four years with the Great Central Railway Company. This presumably included time with its predecessor, the Manchester Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company, the name having been changed in 1897.

Louis Edward Roberts married Betsy Ellen Philips at Chorlton-on-Medlock in late 1872. He died on 13 September 1916 at his residence, 55 Newport Road, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester.
