Born in 1854 at Turton near Bolton, Marshall Robinson was the youngest son of Doctor John Robinson and his wife Martha, the daughter of Thomas Greenhalgh of Clitheroe. He was articled to George Cunliffe and Richard Knill Freeman of Bolton before commencing independent practice as an architect at 19 Acresfield, Bolton.

Marshall Robinson married Margaret Wood (c.1861 - before1911) of Shepshed, in Leicestershire at Loughborough in 1882. They lived at “The Park,” Sharples near Bolton and later at Lytham. He died in 1923 and was survived by his three children - Aubrey Vincent Robinson (1886-c1937), Evelyn Robinson (1889-) and Raymond Wood Robinson (1894-1980)
