Thomas George was born at Stapleford, Lincolnshire in 1822, and moved to Ashton-under-Lyne where in 1851 he was a joiner employing eleven men and two apprentices; he later expanded the business into a building and contracting company. Approaching seventy years of age, he entered into partnership with his son William Henry George as architects and surveyors with offices at Old Square, Ashton-under-Lyne.
