The only son of Thomas Foden, corn factor, and his wife Annie (formerly Milnes) Thomas Milnes Foden was recorded as an architectural student in 1911. He served in the First World War being appointed 2nd Lieutenant East Lancashire Regiment Territorial Force in 1916. [The London Gazette, 3 November, 1916. Page 10645], before commencing practice on his own account at Century Buildings, Deansgate. About 1923 he entered into partnership with Gordon Hemm under the style Foden Hemm and Williams with offices at Manchester and Liverpool. (Details for Williams have yet to be found) and was elected LRIBA in 1925 at which date he hyphenadted his surname to Milnes-Foden. The partnership between Milnes-Foden and Hemm was dissolved on 11 July 1936. He also entered into partnership with his father in business as Land and Estate Agents, Valuers and Insurance Agents, at 199, Deansgate, Manchester, under the style or firm of Thomas Foden & Son, this partnership being dissolved in 1928.

On 9 December 1913 at the Cathedral, he married Maude, the youngest daughter of J A W Whitehead, late of Trafford Old Hall, Old Trafford [Manchester Guardian 13 December 1913 page 6]
