The son of Thomas Nuttall and his wife Nancy (nee Wood) Thomas Nuttall was born at Manchester Road, Bury, on 20 February 1838 and educated at the Bury Grammar School. He trained as a civil and mining engineer and became an Associate Member of the Institute of Civil Engineers, 1872; and Fellow of the Surveyors' Institute, in 1890. Thomas Nuttall was elected a member of the Manchester District Society of Surveyors, Land Agents and Valuers in 1875, and was made its President in 1889.  He was one of the first promoters of the High School for Girls in the town of Bury and is a Director; is the Land Steward and Surveyor for the Trustees of the Bury Grammar School. He had been surveyor for Ramsbottom and Prestwich Local Boards, engineer for the Ramsbottom sewage scheme, and was well known ail over Lancashire arbitrator and umpire. He was for a time in partnership with his younger brother before the latter’s departure to Liverpool in the 1880s.. Shortly before his death he took his son Herbert into partnership

Thomas Nuttall, died on Sunday 6 May 1900 at, his residence, Fernsholme, Bury, aged 62.
