Son of William Fairclough and Lucy and a younger brother of John Fairclough (1854-1923), the first mayor of Leigh. He was a staunch Catholic and was for some years President of the Leigh Catholic Club. Williamr Fairclough was a member of the syndicate which purchased the Earl of Ellesmere's Lancashire and Cheshire estates and was a director of the Bridgewater Estates, the Astley Estate Company, the Bedford and Mill Lane Spinning Company, and the Astley and Tyldesley Collieries.

William Fairclough died at Merivale, Sandon, near Chelmsford on 25 September 1923, after an illness of several months' duration. Effects: £101,488 9s
