NEW METHODIST FREE CHURCH AT MIDDLESBROUGH. LAYING THE FOUNDATION-STONE - This (Tuesday) afternoon, the foundation stone of the new chapel and schools to be built st the corner of Grange-road and Dunning-street, was laid by Mrs H. W. F. Bolckow. .....
The style of the architecture of the chapel will be classic, and the latter will be built of brick, faced with dressed bricks, and extensively relieved with stone dressings to the two principal fronts. The chapel will be entered from Grange-road by two large doors, the ascent to which will be by a bold flight of steps. There will be an outer and inner vestibule so as to effectually prevent draughts from entering the building. The chapel will be 49 feet 6 inches long and will afford accommodation on the ground floor for 530 adults; the galleries, to be situated on three sides of the building, are to seat 470 adults, making a total of 1,000 seats. The minister's vestry will be situated at the end of the chapel, and be 17 feet by 12 feet, and over this will be the organ and seats for the choir. The floor of the pews on the ground floor will incline from the pulpit to the entrance to the building. The height of the chapel from floor to ceiling will be 34 feet, the latter being flat and divided into moulded panels, and have a bold cornice all round. The schools are to be situated at the rear of the chapel; they will be two storeys in height and contain nine classrooms affording accommodation for 350 scholars, access to the upper school-room being obtained by a stone staircase. Accommodation will be provided in the basement of the chapel for the heating of the same. The total cost of the chapel and schools, exclusive of heating and the boundary walls, will be about £6,000. The architect to whom the work has been entrusted is Mr Edward Potts, of Clegg Street, Oldham. [Daily Gazette for Middlesbrough - Tuesday 5 October 1875 page 3]
