Church of St Matthew, Monkswood, Usk, Monmouthshire

St Matthew's church is located on the north side of the A472 in the hamlet of Monkswood. It was built in Decorated style in 1882-4 to designs of architect E.H.Lingen Barker and replaced an earlier church on the site. A small and undistinguished church, it is built of greenish local stone and Bath stone dressings. It consists of nave and lower chancel, gabled south porch and north vestry. The church is a small building of stone, consisting of chancel and nave and a western belfry containing 2 bells: the church was entirely rebuilt in 1883—4, a cost of £1,038, in the Early English style, from plans furnished by Mr. E. Lingen-Barker, of Hereford, the chief contributors to the outlay being Miss E. A. Stokes, of Cheltenham, and the Duke of Beaufort: there are 140 sittings. [Kelly's Directory of South Wales (1895)]
