COLD STORAGE: TWO NEW ROOMS AT SMITHFIELD - The Markets Department of the Manchester Corporation yesterday opened two new rooms for cold storage. Long ago the Department provided cold storage for the goods of the market tenants; the demand, however, for space speedily exceeded the supply. The City Architect (Mr H Price) was accordingly called upon to design two new rooms, thoroughly equipped for maintaining all classes of perishable produce under the most suitable conditions and at proper temperatures. These new rooms, which add 23,750 cubic feet to the cold storage-room and raise the total to 105,880 cubic feet, were formally opened by the Deputy Chairman of the Markets Committee (Councillor Chantler). The rooms are conveniently placed for the Smithfield Market tenants, being just under the wholesale fish marke. [Manchester Guardian 29 October 1915 page 3].
