In March 1891 the Swan Hotel at the junction of Bradshawgate and Churchgate was offered for sale by auction. At this time the adjoining No 4 Churchgate had recently been acquired by the hotel and plans had been prepared by Frank Mitcham (of London) in conjunction with Messrs Robinson and Morris, architects, Nelson Square, Bolton to convert the building into additional bedroom and other accommodation for the hotel. The scheme had been sanctioned by the licensing authorities, plans and specifications had been prepared and a provisional contract entered into.
