Dukinfield Ward Conservative Club, Stanley Road, Stalybridge
NEW CONSERVATIVE CLUB FOR STALYBRIDGE – On Saturday afternoon Mr. M White-Ridley, Conservative candidate for the representation of the borough in Parliament, laid the foundation stone of a new club which the Conservatives of Dukinfield Ward have decided to erect in Stanley Street at a cost of about £2,000. The style adopted by the architects (Messrs Eaton, Sons, and Cantrell, of Ashton-under-Lyne) is of the Renaissance period and the front to Stanley Street is most effective. The ground floor will contain newsroom, two smoke rooms, and bar with spacious entrance hall. The upper floor will consist principally of the large lecture room with roof partially open-timbered and adjoining this is a serving room for tea parties etc. and the usual lavatory, etc. accommodation. There will also be a separate entrance for the lecture room so that members may use the ground floor rooms even if the former is occupied. The caretaker’s house is in communication with the club and the whole scheme seems vet comfortable. The front will be of Accrington brick and Yorkshire stone dressings and some red terra cotta enrichment. Mr Hugh H. Platt of Sand Street, Stalybridge, is the main contractor; Messrs Shuttleworth Brothers, Stalybridge will do the stonework and Mr H Rigby, Dukinfield, the plumbing, painting etc. [Stalybridge Reporter - Saturday 27 January 1900 page 5]
