THE ENSOR MILL, CASTLETON. STARTING THE ENGINES - Another instance of the rapid erection and equipment of a mill in Rochdale is afforded in the case of the Ensor Mill, Castleton, where the engines wore started for the first time on Tuesday. A year ago - on 17 October 1907, to be precise - the Ensor Limited, was registered with a capital of £50,000 to erect a mill for the purpose of spinning condenser yarns. ….. All the capital was subscribed privately, and there was no delay putting the project into practical shape. As a matter of fact, the first sod was cut on the day before the company was registered, and the erection of the mill was pushed on with all speed. The mill contains twelve pairs of mules with 20,000 spindles and 180 cords, and super-fine Egyptian condenser yarn will be produced. It will find employment for about a hundred operatives. The engines, which were started yesterday in the presence of Messrs. AV. H. Waller, J. J. 'Smithies, If. Kitchen, and J. Lye (directors). have a total capacity of from, 000 to ,000 horse-power. in being put through the machinery, and it is expected that yarn will be produced by Friday. The engines of the Ensor Mill Co., Castleton, were christened on Saturday afternoon Mrs J. J. Smithies, wife of one of the directors. in the presence of about four hundred shareholders and loan holders. After naming the engines "Hannah," Mrs. Smithies was presented on behalf of the architect, Mr. Sidney Stott, of Oldham, with a beautiful silver rose bowl.
