A scheme of sanitary reform proposed by Mr J Leigh, Officer of Health for Manchester and sanctioned by the Heath Committee proposed the division of the city into districts, in each of which the Clinical and other hospitals would establish  special accommodation for children suffering infectious diseases.  Plans for a detached pavilion were prepared by Mr E Salomons, architect, and the foundations commenced; but in consequence of a strong opposition on the part of some of the subscribers and residents of the neighbourhood of the Hospital, the Committee were reluctantly compelled to abandon their portion of this most important work at a time when its execution might have secured the success of the whole scheme. The pavilion prepared would have been in its way a model hospital of the kind, and the Committee will gladly furnish the plans to any benevolent individual desirous of doing good in his generation by assisting to grapple with the enormous waste of infant life in this city. The Committee in abandoning the proposed pavilion decided to enlarge the existing building by the addition of a wing as originally contemplated. An important feature of this wing will be a small separate ward for the reception of any in-patients of the Hospital whose diseases may assume an infectious character, and for whose isolation from the rest of the patients no provision has hitherto existed, excepting by removal to their homes, with the probable risk of infecting an entire street.
