NOTE - Before its demolition, the head office of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway stood on an island site opposite the station buildings. While it is clear that Dawes was responsible for this extension of 1884 he has been erroneously credited with the design of the existing main station buildings of 1903-1909. Given that William Dawes died in 1897 such an attribution would not appear credible.
