In January 1902, Harrogate Town Council organised a competition for the design of a new town hall. Eighty entries were received, and Waddington, Son and Dunkerley came second, winning a prize of £100. First prize went to Henry Thomas Hare of London, but the project was abandoned because of opposition from the town’s ratepayers over the cost. New municipal buildings were eventually built in 1931 to a design by L H Clarke. [RF]
