Independent Methodist Sunday Schools. Smith Street, Oldham
Plans are being prepared by Mr. A. Banks, Oldham, for the erection of new Methodist Sunday schools, Smith-street, Oldham, to accommodate 500 persons. The building will be faced with red bricks, relieved with stone dressings, and will be in a style to harmonise with the adjoining chapel. [Building News v47 25 July 1884 page 151]
OLDHAM - New Independent Methodist Sunday-schools in Smith Street have just been opened. They are in the Italian Gothic style. On the ground floor are infants' school (with gallery) 21 feet by 14 feet 6 inches, large schoolroom, 58 feet. by 33 feet, young men's classroom, 20 feet by 13 feet, and eleven other classrooms. The roof of the large room is open to the level of the collar-beam. In the basement is a kitchen and cellar for heating apparatus. The front of the building is faced with Ruabon brick of J. C. Edwards's make, relieved with Yorkshire stone dressings, the base being of Yorkshire parpoints. The walls to the sides and backs are faced with local bricks. The lead lights were executed by Mr. S. Bourne, of Birmingham. Wood-block paving is used for the floors. The work has been carried out by Mr. Wm. Lees, builder, Smith-street, Oldham. The architect is Mr. A. Banks, Union-street: Oldham.
