Little Bolton Town Hall, All Saints Street and George Street, Little Bolton
The town hall was commissioned by the trustees of the township of Little Bolton including Richard Ainsworth, the proprietor of Halliwell Bleachworks, who donated the site. Designed in the neoclassical style, and built by a local contractor, Thomas Heaton, in ashlar stone with a slate roof, it was officially opened on 7 February 1828. The Trustees' minutes show that a number of designs were submitted before the one by John Thompson of Blackburn was accepted, though alterations were made.
The town hall remained in use as the meeting place of Bolton Corporation until the new town hall was completed in 1873 and continued to serve as a magistrates' court and a police station until November 1876. In 1840 a private house was built adjacent to the north end of the building About 1876 this was linked and the complex converted into a public library in 1879 a use which continued until the twentieth century. After a period being used as a store, it was opened as Bolton Museum.
