The airport was built on land owned by Manchester Corporation. In the 19th century the land had been used as tip for nightsoil, and sewage waste.

The Air Port of Barton now ranks as a national asset. It was an important link in the Continental Service, maintained by Imperial Airways during the summer months by means of a fleet of “air taxis,” which more than doubled during the year. Northern Air Lines continue to offer rapid transport to those whose business practice .... and the close of the year has seen the opening of an hotel at the airport for the greater convenience and comfort of all those whose affairs take them there.
