STRETFORD - New offices are in course of erection for the local board of Stretford, near Manchester. They have a frontage to Talbot Road of 82 feet and are Renaissance in style. The ground-floor contains the offices of surveyor (with fireproof plan-room), collector, sanitary inspector, school-board officer, lavatory, etc., and two spare rooms. The floors of entrance hall, corridors, and staircase on this floor are formed of cement concrete, on rolled-iron bearers, finished on surface with marble mosaic work. The first floor contains the clerk's offices (with fireproof strong-room), boardroom, committee-room, waiting - room, and cloakroom, with lavatory. The board-room and corridors on ground and first floors aro heated with Gibbs' small-bore heating apparatus, from a heating chamber in cellar floor. There are also two fireplaces in board-room. The rooms are ventilated by patent louvre inlet and outlet ventilators fixed in flues formed in the walls. The internal woodwork fittings and finishing are of pitch pine, varnished, and polished baywood. The caretaker's apartments are behind the main block, with separate entrance and yard. The contractors for the work are Messrs. Brown and Son, Trafford Road, Salford. [Building News 3 February 1888 page 201]
