Built at a cost of £12,000 for Charles Revill as a drama theatre with a capacity of 3,000, The Theatre Royal opened on 14 September 1891. Proscenium opening 29ft, stage depth 45ft, stage width 75ft (1908).

The new Theatre Royal and Opera House in Ashton-under-Lyne will most probably be opened in August. The house, which is being erected from the designs of the well-known theatre architect Mr Frank Matcham is situated in Oldham Road, Ashton, next to the Technical School and Free Library. As some £12,000 is being spent on the erection, Ashton ought to have a theatre quite equal to the theatrical wants of the town. [Manchester Guardian 13 July 1891 page 3]
