New Wing ,Cliffs Residential Hotel., North Shore Promenade, Blackpool

Started in 1922 but substantially rebuilt 1936-7 more than doubling the frontage and providing an underground car park. Baroque style. Art deco tower. The Cliffs Hotel, of red brick with Shaws cream faience detailing, was begun in 1921 and completed in 1936 7 with the addition of the north wing and central section designed by Halstead Best.

CLIFFS HOTEL - Blackpool Cliffs Hotel Limited was incorporated on 19 June. 1922 to acquire the "Bryn Tivy" Private Hotel and its contents. The Bryn Tivy Hotel was considerably enlarged in 1923 and 1924, and its name was then changed to "The Cliffs Hotel." Mr. and Mrs. Halton were appointed as joint Managing Directors in 1923. and the business was run very successfully under their management.  A new company was formed on 30 November 1936 offering shares in a new company of the same name. To meet the increasing demands for accommodation it was decided to extend the Hotel to more than twice its present size and to provide a Large Dining Hall, Spacious Lounges, Drawing and Writing Rooms. a Ballroom and Conference Hall capable of seating 700—800 persons, Underground Garage, and to increase the number of bedrooms from 102 to 220. Contract for these extensions and alterations was therefore made with Messrs. Atherton Brothers (Blackpool) Limited. and work was commenced on the 7 October 1936; the work being carried out under the supervision or Mr. Halstead Best. FRIBA as architect. The company also incurred costs in respect of decorating, new furnishings and other similar matters. It is anticipated that the extensions and alterations will be completed and the new accommodation ready for use by the end of June. 1937. The Contract sum for extensions and alterations was £47, 557. The Directors estimated that the total cost of the new works including the architect's fees, decorations, new furnishings and expenditure in preparing the rooms for use to be approximately £63,000.
