A design was prepared for this church and the building work put out to tender by E W Pugin. the first sod being cut on 19 May 1873. However, when the foundation stone was laid on 16 August Pugin had seemingly been supplanted by Edmund Kirby (qv). The formal ceremony of dedication took place on 12 March 1876, performed by the Bishop of Liverpool. Church closed 2004. Application for demolition made in 2015.
