NEW CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH AND SCHOOLS - The memorial stone of a Congregational Church and Schools, in course of erection in Russell-street, City Road, was laid on Saturday afternoon.  In the basement of the building there is a schoolroom 13 feet high, to obtain which the floor of the building over it has been raised seven feet above the level of the street. Galleries will be formed at the front and on both sides of the chapel, and the roof will be divided into three spans resting on cast-iron columns. The centre span will have an apsidal end, so as to disguise an internal defect, which would otherwise be seen, arising from the necessity of cutting off a corner of the chapel on account of the form or the ground. The edifice, which will of a Gothic character and will include a steeple, is being built of red bricks and Hollington stone. It has been designed by Mr. H. Fuller, of Manchester and London, and its cost will be about £3,250. The school will accommodate 500 children; the capability of the chapel will depend on the depth of the galleries, which has not yet been determined upon. [Manchester Guardian 15 July 1867 page 3]
