ST PHILIP’S SALFORD – Last year a faculty was granted for the rearrangement and improvement of the interior of this great Renaissance Church. Mr J Medland Taylor of Manchester is the architect. The first instalment of the work is the font and baptistery at the west, the cost of which has been provided by the nieces of Mr Nicholson, a former rector. The second phase, (now actually in hand) is the formation of a chancel within the church and the formation of a little chapel at the south east corner.  Other work will be undertaken as funds permit, including the formation of a choir vestry at the north-west corner; the opening of the disused western porch and entrance; the re-seating  of the rest of the church; and the decoration of the interior with mosaic, frescoes or painting. The intention is to maintain and develop the classical character of the building and show that the style of Renaissance lends itself no less aptly than Gothic forms to religious expression and devotional effect.
