Founded in 1866, the Bedford Brewing & Malting Company of Leigh, Lancashire was renamed George Shaw & Co., Ltd., Leigh Brewery in 1902.  They rebuilt the hotel in 1896-1897 to the designs of J C Prestwich. Robinsons Brewery bought the Royal Hotel in the 1920s and the pub closed in 1971 for the redevelopment of Ordsall.
