The theatre had been destroyed by fire on 17 August 1890 with only the stage and Bridge Street elevation having been saved. Plans for the re-building prepared by Booth and Chadwick had been approved on 27 November 1890 but covenants prohibited changes to the Bridge street frontage until 1893 when the lease expired. The auditorium was re-built behind the facade and the theatre re-opened on 28 March 1891.
