In December 1930 the Royal Court Theatre in King Street, Wigan, re-opened as the Court Cinema after extensive alteration and remodelling of the original building to the designs of Gray and Evans of Liverpool. The proscenium was moved back, thereby increasing the seating capacity of the stalls, while the original balconies were replaced with new on the cantilever system. The stage boxes and first floor dressing room were removed and the exits from the auditorium were modified. The cinema contained 1295 seats. A back projection system was employed until about 1950 when a projection room was constructed at the rear of the upper circle. The cinema closed on 15 August 1973.
