The first mention of a place of worship at Loweswater was in 1125 in the records of St Bees Priory. In 1829 a small chapel was consecrated and in 1884 this small four-bay church was remodelled on a grander scale with raised roof and new polygonal sanctuary; it was probably widened at the same time to increase the number of seats. This work was undertaken when a lead mine was opened at Godferhead, and an expansion in population was anticipated. In the event, the mine failed, and the local population remained almost static.
Loweswater Church, in the Lake district, is about to be restored, from plans by Mr. William Deighton, of Manchester. [Building News 30 May 1884 page xvii]
