The Unitarian Chapel at Hale Barns was built on Chapel Lane in 1723, but schoolrooms and a schoolmaster’s house were erected some distance away in the centre of the village in the mid 18th century. In 1880, a new school building was built alongside, and in 1910 Dunkerley was asked to enlarge it by bringing forward the frontage, installing basement cloakrooms, and building a covered walkway to the old schoolrooms.
