Squash Racquet Court at Hackney Wick
In this Squash Racquet Court an attempt has been made to give to the design a decorative quality not usually to be found in this type of structure. In order that the building should not appear out of scale with its neighbours, the fact that it consists of a single tall chamber has been cleverly concealed by the device of putting a verandah around it. This latter, which is distinguished by a charming trellis with concave roof above, only reaches two-thirds of the height of the façade, while the upper portion has two windows of moderate dimensions. A pedimental roof with top lights at its apex crowns the whole. Again, the architects, Messrs. Adshead & Ramsey, have caught the spirit of the eighteenth century and have produced a scholarly work, delightful in its elegant simplicity and refinement.
