The parish of St Aidan’s was created in the 1890s, and a new church designed by Richard Basnett Preston was opened on Easter Day 1899, with the principal funding coming from William J Crossley of the engineering company Crossley Brothers. Crossley had also set aside a sum of money for the building of a rectory, and Dunkerley was given the commission. Detailed plans are held at Manchester Central Library. In 1971, the parish of St Aidan's was joined with that of Christ Church, Bradford-cum-Beswick, and the Manchester University Settlement took over the rectory, later demolishing it and replacing it with a modern building.
