A CHURCH AT LAST - For the first time since it was formed in 1899 the congregation of St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church of England at Heaton Chapel has an actual church in which to hold its services. At first the services were held in the Conservative Club, and after five years a hall was built in Heaton Moor Road, which has since served as both church and Sunday school. The new church occupies land in front of this hall, and has been designed by a Manchester architect, Mr Thomas Reive, who has been a member of the congregation for many years and who sang in the choir at the opening and dedication yesterday by the Right Rev Thomas Mackay, Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of England. It has already been described as having been designed “to express the dignity and sobriety of the Church in a simple manner free from ornament and affectation.” This it assuredly does but in the doing of it beauty has been achieved. The possession by the congregation of this comely building is the reward of long and patient effort in the face of many difficulties. [Manchester Guardian 18 January 1937 page 11]
