Designed by John Palmer and opened in November 1825, the first St Mary’s Church, with presbytery and schools, was built on a site obtained from the Astley family on Astley Street, close to Dukinfield Colliery. It was described as a neat chapel of the Grecian style able to accommodate 1,000 worshippers, but mining subsidence soon rendered the building unsafe, resulting in its demolition in 1848.
