ST. STEPHEN'S UNITED PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. The above place of worship, which is situate in Bradford-street, Haulgh, was formally opened on Sunday last …. . The church is newly built, and not yet quite complete the character of the building is plain Gothic with open-timbered roof, being 53 feet long and 28 feet wide, having a front and side entrance, the former having inside porch with double doors. The north end is a semi-octagon, in which are placed a platform and pulpit, and at the north-east angle there is a vestry, 11 feet square, having an outside entrance and door communicating with the church. The church is lighted four star-lights along the centre of the roof, and intended to be heated hot air, a heating chamber having been constructed under the platform, with outside entrance by steps. Moveable and reversible benches are placed in the church, and there is accommodation for over 300 persons. Boundary walls are course of erection, and those fronting Bradford Street and Dorset Street will have iron palisading and gates. The architect is Mr. Haselden, Bolton; and the contractor for the erection is Mr. Andrew H. Low, of Halliwell. [Bolton Evening News - Thursday 28 March 1872 page 3]
