                    It was originally proposed to operate the section of line from Victoria station eastwards by means of an inclined plane and stationary steam engines. As noted in a contemporary report: …. The carriages on the inclined plane, extending from near the Leeds end of this station to the old Leeds line, are to be worked by means of steam engines of 240 horses' power, with an endless rope. Indeed, this machinery will be somewhat similar to that used for the Liverpool tunnel, save that the rope is to be manufactured of wire instead of hemp.
