STYVECHALE GARDEN VILLAGE - OPENING OF NEW BUILDING ESTATE - A start has been made this week with the work of constructing the streets that are to be laid out in the Styvechale Garden Village. The estate comprises about 21 acres of land adjacent to the Kenilworth Road, and is considered be admirably suited for the provision of a garden village. The surroundings are of a particularly pleasing and attractive kind. On two sides the estate faces Styvechale Common and the Kenilworth Road, with its fine avenue of trees: and in another direction are the Hearsall Golf Links, whilst the fact that the situation is within one mile of the Coventry railway station is another distinct advantage. The plans provide for the construction of one main thoroughfare, 45 feet wide, leading from the Kenilworth Road to Beechwood Avenue. This will be a first-class road, and, in addition, there will be subsidiary roads. About one-third of the frontage faces Styvechale Common, and the type of residence proposed to be allowed here is the value of about £450, including land. Others will range from £300 upwards, whilst some will probably not exceed £275 in value. The building line prescribed is 35 feet from the centre of the road in all instances, with footways ranging from six feet to ten feet in width. In the wider thoroughfares gravel margins are allowed for, and on either side will planted a row of trees. The names of the roads to be constructed are of a distinctly appropriate character. They are: Stoneleigh Avenue, Woodland Avenue, Northleigh Avenue, Eastleigh Avenue, Westleigh Avenue, and Southleigh Avenue. The contract for the making the streets has been secured by Mr. E. O. C. Howells, Coventry, and it anticipated that land will be available for building operations in about two months' time It may be mentioned that the houses erected will provided with town water, gas, and electric light, the estate being within the borough. The architect and surveyor is Mr. Walter H. Hattrell, Hertford Street, from whom further particulars may  be obtained. [Coventry  Evening Telegraph 17 February 1914 page 3]

STYVECHALE GARDEN VILLAGE - This new building estate, comprising some 21 acres, regarded as eminently suited to the purpose. Facing Styvechale Common and the Kenilworth Road on two sides, and fronting the Hearsall Golf Links in another direction, the situation, contended, could scarcely be improved upon a site for development upon the lines of a garden suburb. Already, it is stated, there are indications of a good demand for plots of ground for the erection of residences both of the detached and semi-detached type. Some detailed particulars to the roads now in course construction have appeared in these columns. There is to be one main thoroughfare, 45 feet wide, leading from the Kenilworth Road to Beechwood Avenne, together with a number of subsidiary roads. Gravel margins sufficient allow of the planting trees will be provided for in the wider roads. As the estate comes within the borough, occupiers of the houses that will be erected are to be supplied with town water, gas, and electric light. As already indicated, the property built will consist mainly of detached and semi-detached houses. Under no circumstances, we are informed, will there be blocks of more than four houses, the intention being to avoid the monotony often seen locally in recent years, of long rows of one fixed type of dwelling. It may be added that, no house on the estate is to be of less than £300. Mr Walter H Hattrell, Hertford Street, is the architect. [Coventry Evening Telegraph 27 February 1914 page 3]
