The Bateman Arms was built about1750 by Sir James Bateman (Lord Mayor of London) as a building where his estate workers would congregate on pay day.  Over the years it also became a staging post for drovers walking livestock from West Wales to  markets in Birmingham and London. E H Lingen Barker carried out restoration works in 1884-1885
