Opened by John Walsh in 1875, the family‑run company began selling baby linen and ladies' clothes before expanding into a department store selling a wider range of goods. By 1895 there were 36 departments, The store was bombed in the Sheffield Blitz in World War II and moved to temporary premises at Broomhill. Post war rebuilding of the damaged High Street was slow, it was not until 1951 that the damaged Walsh's store was demolished with a new store designed by J S Beaumont and built by George Longden Ltd opening on May 13, 1953.
The shop later became variously Rackhams, House of Fraser, and TJ Hughes.
