Originally designed as a glass roofed Winter Garden and opened on the 11th of July 1878, but in 1889 it was converted into the Wonter Gardens Theatre by Thomas Mitchell, who added a proscenium stage 31 feet wide by 39 feet deep, and new private boxes.
