The son of Edmund Taylor, pork butcher, and his wife Alice, Charles Thomas Taylor was born at Oldham on 17 July 1862 He was educated at the Oldham High School, and Owens College, Manchester; before being articled in 1878, with Mr. Edward Potts, FRIBA; during his pupilage he attended classes at the Oldham Science and Art School and obtained a £50 Scholarship. He remained with Edward Potts for several years as an assistant before passing the qualifying examination of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1888 and became an Associate in the same year. He commenced practice on his own account in 1892 and was Associate of the Manchester Society of Architects, and member of the first Council of the Oldham Society of Architects.
