Harold Oswald Prestwich was born in 1881, in Leigh, the eldest son of James Caldwell Prestwich and his wife Georgina Matilda. He was educated at Manchester Grammar School and later attended Manchester School of Art. Articled to his father 1898-1902, he remained as his assistant 1902-1907, becoming a partner in the firm in 1907 and remained as such until 1947. In 1912 he became LRIBA, , proposed by Edgar Wood and Manchester Society of Architects. Major projects with which he was involved included the Civic Centres at Tunbridge Wells and Northampton, Leigh Town Hall and Leigh Infirmary. In many ways he never emerged from the shadow of his father with whom he worked for over forty years.
In 1910 he married Gertrude, the second daughter of Peter and Mary Jane Hayes at Leigh. They had one son: John Oswald Prestwich born 26 June 1914 died January 2003.
Harold Prestwich died 0n 7 October 1953 and was interred in the grave of his in-laws, Peter and Mary Jane Hayes, at Leigh Cemetery.
