Born in 1822 Isaac Charles Gilbert of Nottingham (usually called just Charles), was a son of Josiah Gilbert a Congregational minister and his wife Ann (Taylor). She was the elder sister of Isaac Taylor, and thus the aunt of the Manchester architects James Medland and Henry Taylor (qv). Charles Gilbert first appeared in Lascelles and Hagar’s Nottingham Directory of 1848, at which time he was involved with the design of the first People’s College. He was architect of a number of Congregational chapels in various parts of the country.
